Skincare & Aesthetic Treatments Guide

A comprehensive, evidence-based guide to modern medical spa treatments. From injectables and laser therapies to body contouring and surgical procedures — understand what each treatment does, who it is for, expected downtime, and important safety considerations.

syringe

Injectables & Neuromodulators

The most popular entry point into aesthetic medicine. These quick, minimally invasive treatments relax wrinkles, restore volume, or stimulate collagen with little to no downtime.

Botulinum Toxin (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, Daxxify)

Blocks nerve signals to facial muscles, temporarily relaxing dynamic wrinkles like forehead lines, crow's feet, and frown lines.

Details

Results appear in 3–7 days, peak at 2 weeks, last 3–4 months (Daxxify lasts 6–9 months). Zero downtime. ~$300–$600 per session. The most performed non-surgical aesthetic procedure globally with 9.88 million treatments in 2024.

Considerations

Avoid if pregnant, breastfeeding, or have neuromuscular conditions. Temporary eyelid ptosis occurs in ~2% of patients.

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers (Juvéderm, Restylane)

Gel-based injectables that instantly add volume to cheeks, lips, jawline, tear troughs, and nasolabial folds.

Details

Results are immediate. Last 6–24 months depending on product and area. $700–$1,200 per syringe. 5.33 million treatments in 2024. Reversible with hyaluronidase.

Considerations

Vascular occlusion is the most serious risk (rare). Hyaluronidase reverses HA fillers with 84% success within 5 days. Avoid blood thinners 48h before.

Biostimulators (Sculptra, Radiesse, Skinvive)

Not fillers — these stimulate your own collagen production over time for gradual, natural-looking volume.

Details

Sculptra (PLLA) rebuilds collagen over 3–6 months, lasting up to 2 years. $900–$1,500 per vial, typically 2–4 vials over 3 sessions. Skinvive uses HA microdroplets for cheek smoothness and glow ($600–$800).

Considerations

Sculptra requires 5x daily massage for 5 days post-treatment to prevent nodules. Results are gradual — patience required.

PRP & PRF Therapy (Platelet-Rich Plasma / Fibrin)

Uses your own blood's growth factors to rejuvenate skin and stimulate hair growth. Processed and reinjected after microneedling or alone.

Details

PRF releases growth factors over 10–14 days (vs PRP's immediate release). Best results stacked with microneedling. $500–$1,500 per session. 3 sessions recommended.

Considerations

Off-label for cosmetic use. Infection risk exists if sterile technique is not followed. Avoid if active blood-borne infection, clotting disorder, or pregnancy.

laser

Laser & Energy-Based Devices

Advanced light and energy platforms that treat everything from pigmentation and wrinkles to scars and unwanted hair. Modern devices are smarter, safer, and work across all skin types.

Fractional CO₂ Laser Resurfacing

The gold standard for deep wrinkles, acne scars, and advanced photoaging. Creates micro-columns of thermal injury surrounded by healthy tissue for rapid healing.

Details

7–10 days downtime. $1,800–$4,000 per session. Dramatic results in a single session. Lumenis UltraPulse and Sciton ProFractional are leading platforms.

Considerations

Not suitable for darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI) without extreme caution. Requires significant downtime and post-care.

Non-Ablative Fractional Laser (Fraxel, Moxi)

Gentler resurfacing that preserves the skin surface while treating the dermis. Good for early photoaging, tone, and texture.

Details

2–4 days downtime. $600–$1,400 per session. Requires 3–5 sessions for optimal results. Moxi (1927nm thulium) is the modern successor.

Considerations

Less dramatic per session than CO₂, but much faster recovery. Ideal for maintenance and prevention.

Hybrid Resurfacing (Halo)

Combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths in a single pass for uniform improvement in texture, tone, and pigment.

Details

3–5 days downtime. $1,200–$2,200 per session. Combines 2940nm (ablative) + 1470nm (non-ablative) wavelengths.

Considerations

Higher risk in inexperienced hands due to combined energies. Requires skilled operator.

Picosecond Lasers (PicoWay, PicoSure)

Ultra-fast pulses that shatter pigment via photoacoustic shockwave rather than heat. Superior for tattoos, lentigines, and melasma adjunct.

Details

1–2 days downtime. $500–$900 per session. Fewer treatments needed than Q-switched for tattoo removal. Safer in Fitzpatrick III–V skin.

Considerations

Best evidence for tattoos and lentigines. Melasma treatment is still adjunctive to topical therapy.

IPL / BBL Photofacials

Broadband pulsed light (not laser) that targets diffuse redness, sun damage, and pigmentation. BBL (Sciton) is the advanced refinement.

Details

Minimal downtime. $300–$600 per session. Best for maintenance rather than correction. 30% of med spa visits include a HydraFacial or IPL.

Considerations

IPL is the most over-promised modality. Low-fluence "laser facials" are often expensive placebos. Not suitable for dark skin tones.

Laser Hair Removal

Targets hair follicles with concentrated light to permanently reduce unwanted hair. Works on legs, underarms, bikini, face, and body.

Details

Zero downtime. 6–8 sessions needed. 95% satisfaction rate. Modern devices like Alma Soprano Ice offer pain-free treatments for all skin types.

Considerations

Works best on dark hair/light skin contrast. Newer devices accommodate darker skin tones. Maintenance sessions may be needed annually.

Vascular Lasers (PDL, KTP, Nd:YAG)

Pulsed dye laser (595nm) for rosacea and port-wine stains. KTP (532nm) for superficial vessels. Nd:YAG (1064nm) for leg veins and darker skin.

Details

0–7 days downtime (purpura optional with PDL). $300–$800 per session. Nd:YAG at 1064nm is the only safe vascular wavelength for Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin.

Considerations

Requires precise wavelength selection per condition. Not all clinics carry all platforms.

Skin Rejuvenation & Facials

From lunchtime glow treatments to deep chemical peels, these procedures improve skin texture, tone, and clarity with minimal to moderate downtime.

Microneedling (SkinPen, RF Microneedling)

Creates controlled micro-injuries that trigger collagen and elastin production. RF microneedling (Morpheus8) adds heat energy for deeper tightening.

Details

1–3 days downtime for standard; 3–5 for RF. $400–$1,500 per session. 3 sessions recommended for optimal results. Morpheus8 adjusts depth from 0.5–8mm.

Considerations

Great for acne scars, stretch marks, and skin laxity. Results build over 3–6 months after each session.

Chemical Peels (Glycolic, TCA, VI Peel)

Chemical exfoliation that removes damaged outer layers. Ranges from superficial (lunchtime peels) to deep (TCA) for significant resurfacing.

Details

0–14 days downtime depending on depth. $150–$3,000. Superficial peels for dullness and fine lines; deep peels for wrinkles and scarring.

Considerations

Darker skin tones require caution to avoid hyperpigmentation. Must follow strict sun protection post-treatment.

HydraFacial & DiamondGlow

Multi-step treatments that cleanse, exfoliate, extract, and hydrate. HydraFacial is the most popular med spa treatment — about 1 in 3 visits include one.

Details

Zero downtime. $150–$300 per session. Immediate glow. Best for maintenance. Results last 5–7 days. Often combined with light energy or serums.

Considerations

Great for regular maintenance but not corrective for deep wrinkles or scarring. Cannot replace laser or injectable treatments.

Microdermabrasion

Gentle mechanical exfoliation that improves skin tone and texture. Best as a maintenance treatment rather than primary rejuvenation.

Details

Zero downtime. $75–$200 per session. Suitable for all skin types. Can be performed monthly.

Considerations

Mild improvement only. Not effective for deep wrinkles, significant scarring, or laxity.

Dermaplaning

Surgical-grade blade that gently removes dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). Creates a smooth, radiant surface.

Details

Zero downtime. $75–$150 per session. Enhances product penetration. Safe for most skin types.

Considerations

Hair will not grow back thicker. Results last 2–3 weeks.

self_improvement

Body Contouring & Wellness

Non-surgical fat reduction, muscle sculpting, and skin tightening. Modern devices offer measurable results without incisions or general anesthesia.

Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting)

Freezes fat cells to destroy them while sparing skin and nerves. FDA-cleared since 2010. Gold standard for non-invasive fat reduction.

Details

Zero downtime. $600–$1,200 per cycle. 20–25% fat reduction per treated area. Owns ~40% of the non-invasive fat reduction market.

Considerations

For pinchable fat — not for weight loss or skin tightening. Results appear over 2–3 months. Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is a rare side effect.

Emsculpt Neo (HIFEM + RF)

Combines high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy with radiofrequency. Builds muscle (~25% gain) while reducing fat (~30% reduction) in 30-minute sessions.

Details

Zero downtime. $750–$1,000 per session. ~20,000 forced muscle contractions per session. FDA-cleared for abdomen, buttocks, thighs, arms, and calves.

Considerations

Requires 4 sessions. Not for everyone — need adequate muscle mass to amplify. Results visible over weeks.

Medical Weight Loss (GLP-1 Programs)

Physician-supervised programs using GLP-1 agonists (semaglutide, tirzepatide) for significant weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes.

Details

Ongoing treatment. Variable pricing. GLP-1s address fat loss but can leave loose skin — often paired with skin tightening or CoolSculpting.

Considerations

Requires medical supervision and lab monitoring. Side effects include nausea. Not for everyone — thorough screening required.

IV Hydration & Vitamin Therapy

Intravenous delivery of vitamins, minerals, and hydration for rapid absorption. Popular for energy, immune support, hangover recovery, and overall wellness.

Details

Zero downtime. $150–$300 per session. Common drips: Myers' Cocktail, NAD+, glutathione, vitamin C, B-complex.

Considerations

Must be administered by licensed medical professional. Infection risk with improper sterile technique.

Kybella (Deoxycholic Acid)

FDA-approved injectable that destroys fat cells under the chin. Permanently reduces submental fat (double chin).

Details

Mild swelling for a few days. $600–$1,200 per session. Usually 2–4 sessions needed. Results are permanent once fat cells are destroyed.

Considerations

Swelling can be significant for 1–2 weeks. Numbness or nerve injury (rare) in the lower face/jaw area.

stethoscope

Medical & Surgical Procedures

For significant structural concerns, surgical options provide the most dramatic and longest-lasting results. These require more recovery time but address issues that non-surgical options cannot.

Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

The gold standard for significant facial sagging. Repositions the SMAS layer and removes excess skin for a lifted, refreshed result.

Details

2–4 weeks recovery. $8,000–$15,000. Results last 7–15 years. Addresses structural changes that injectables cannot reach.

Considerations

Requires general anesthesia or deep sedation. Significant downtime. Scarring hidden in natural creases.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Removes excess skin and fat from upper and/or lower eyelids. Restores a refreshed, alert appearance.

Details

1–2 weeks recovery. $3,000–$7,000. Results last 5–10 years. Can improve peripheral vision when upper lids droop.

Considerations

May be covered by insurance if vision-impairing. Dry eyes temporary post-op.

Liposuction

Surgical removal of localized fat deposits through small cannulas. Precise body contouring for resistant areas.

Details

1–2 weeks downtime. $3,000–$8,000 depending on area. Permanent fat removal.

Considerations

Not a weight loss procedure. Requires compression garments post-op. Some swelling for weeks.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping)

Permanently alters nasal cartilage and bone for cosmetic or functional improvement. Can address bumps, asymmetry, or breathing issues.

Details

1–2 weeks before returning to work. $5,000–$12,000. Final results visible after 6–12 months once all swelling resolves.

Considerations

Requires significant surgical expertise. Results are permanent and not reversible.

brush

Hair Restoration & Wellness

Non-surgical options for hair loss, eyebrow microblading, and eyelash enhancements. Regenerative therapies are showing promising results.

PRP Hair Restoration

Platelet-rich plasma injected into the scalp to stimulate dormant hair follicles. Uses your own growth factors.

Details

Zero downtime. $500–$1,500 per session. 3 sessions recommended. Results visible over 3–6 months.

Considerations

Off-label for cosmetic use. Best for early-stage hair loss. Not effective for completely bald areas.

Eyebrow Microblading

Semi-permanent tattooing that creates hair-like strokes to fill sparse brows. Results look natural.

Details

Minimal downtime. $400–$800. Lasts 1–3 years. Touch-up required at 4–6 weeks.

Considerations

Must be done by licensed artist with proper hygiene. Color fades over time.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bioidentical hormones to address age-related decline in testosterone, estrogen, and other hormones. Improves energy, mood, libido, and body composition.

Details

Ongoing treatment. $200–$500 per month. Requires blood work and physician supervision. Available as pellets, injections, or topical creams.

Considerations

Requires thorough medical screening. Not for everyone — significant health implications.
