On February 5, 2025 I was a patient at the O&SSC for a surgical procedure. Pre/procedure communication was excellent. We arrived early and met with an admissions clerk who was friendly and completed all the forms that needed to be signed. I had a very short wait before my nurse came to the waiting room to bring me back to the preop area. For some unexplained reason my husband was not allowed to accompany me to this area. I saw several other patients with family members that were allowed to accompany a patient. As thorough as my nurse was with completing the admission process she was sorely inadequate in her IV insertion skills. As an RN`- retired now- I know that you don't slap had veins to "wake them up." It was painful and I told her so. But after she blew the first attempt she decided to try my other arm. Now most nurses explore both arms prior to insertion to identify the best site for IV insertion. Not this one. She even persisted with smacking the back of my hand which I informed her was very painful and wasn't necessary. She finally accessed my vein just above my wrist which was very painful and did not immediately flow. Another nurse checked and moved the IV and said it was running but remained very painful. After an hour or so when the OR called for me we found it was extremely infiltrated and I had to have a restart. This was a different RN that was sending me to the OR. She accessed an antecubital vein in my arm quickly and rather painlessly. Now at 12 days post op the infiltrated IV site is now progressing to mustardly yellow and is less painful. I must also comment that no one gave me a nurse call light!!! This really affects patient safety! I would like to recommend evaluation and re-education on IV insertion techniques to the nursing staff. My husband and I have experienced better care at Danbury Hospital and Yale New Haven than we did at O&SSC. However, with some improvements I would be willing to utilize their services at my physicians request.

Since the surgery center opened, I've heard raving reviews about the quality of care and today, I can confirm that the facility is worth every star. Even before coming in for surgery, the staff was wonderful. Christine (sp?) at the front desk was ever patient answering several questions about my deductible and final costs. The communication before surgery was very clear and every staff member was incredibly attentive. I have been to the Ridgebury Road clinic for office visits, but this was my first time at the surgery center. The pictures online don't do it justice! The waiting area is bright, colorful, and calming, and the pre-op and recovery areas are spacious and spotless. I felt like I was very well attended to, but also had enough privacy when I wanted and needed it. Every single person I encountered today from the woman registering me, the nurses, Dr. Levin himself, and Boris the amusing anesthesiologist, were remarkable. They were gentle, caring, and efficient. I felt heard whenever I had any problems and never felt like I was a bother. Everyone was easy to chat with, explained everything well, and treated me like a person, not just someone on their "list." While my surgery was on the longer side, I couldn't believe how smoothly everything ran. I arrived at the facility at 7:30 and was leaving by 1:30 tops--no sitting in limbo for hours on end. And my friend was able to get text message updates throughout my stay to keep her updated about my status. If I ever need surgery again, I'm 100% choosing Dr. Levin and the OSSC facility!
