I visited the 85th street dermatology clinic for a preventative annual skin screening, and because the procedure is preventative, it is fully covered by my insurance. Weeks later I discovered that my procedure was billed as a new patient visit which is not fully covered by my insurance - now i am responsible for charges i was not anticipating. I called and disputed this with their billing department but they were no help. They should be open and transparent with their patients about their procedure coding and how it may result in costs incurred by the patient. If they were transparent from the beginning i could have planned for the additional charges or found another clinic.

While a PhD student - I flew from Atlanta to New York to visit Dr. Brain Kim about a sudden and progressively worsening chronic itch. The clinic openly advocates for special cases of chronic itch without rash to travel to their clinic. The clinic affirmed they would carefully review medical history before arrival. I. [Incorrect Diagnosis] Dr. Brian Kim's diagnosis was quite a bit off. The diagnosis was: (a) Red Scrotum Syndrome, (b) Erythrasma. It was later discovered that my itch was simply caused by topical Adapalene usage. A few months after the appointment I experimented with stopping topical Adapalene and my condition went away. I told Dr. Brain S. Kim that I was on Adapalene and it was in my medical history report - yet it was not suspect to him. He instead suggested more side-effect heavy drugs. Imagine if I had gone through with those more side-effect heavy drugs my whole life attempting to "treat" this condition, when I could have simply been "cured" stoping topical Adapalene. II. [Unprepared] Dr. Brian Kim appeared to not have read the report sent him before my appointment. This resulted in me having to vocally cram a lot of basic information into Dr. Brian Kim's brain during the a single appointment. A seemingly on-the-fly diagnosis had to be made. If Dr. Brian Kim read by report and used the appointment-time for followup questions and physical examinations I believe a more accurate diagnosis would have resulted. Added context - if you call Dr. Brian's team they will state: (1) that they take people out-of-state all the time, and (2) they want you to send records and any other information about the condition to review before the appointment. III. [No Followup] Dr. Brian Kim cut off all communication shortly after the appointment - after about two emails. This was quite disheartening, as (1) I was in a lot of pain at the time, and (2) he was the top expert in this condition. Added context - their clinic is portrayed as a research clinic taking in only special and rare cases of chronic itch without rash. Additionally, Dr. Brian Kim was uninterested in what ended up curing me which is quite strange for a research doctor. I was hoping to file a formal report to the FDA about the side effects of this drug with him, but he never responded. Recommendation for Patients: Avoid coming here if you are out-of-state. Recommendation for Provider: Avoid fielding patients from out-of-state - as they do not have the resources to effectively: (1) prepare, or (2) follow up - which is required given the nature of complex itching conditions you all tackle.
